Springfield, IL KOA

Nothing to add.

Okay, fine, I’ll add something.

The campground is a pretty long drive from the highway, on winding, hilly roads which decrease in quality as you approach the campground. Eventually, you’re on a single-lane dirt road – if another fifth-wheel had approached from the other direction, we’d both still be sitting there. In addition, there’s a single-lane bridge over a creek that was quiet and pretty (if you’re not thinking about bridge collapses) but that showed evidence of being a raging river during heavy rainfall.

The site was an extra $3.00 because the woman who set the reservation didn’t note that the site she’d put us on had 50 amp service. It didn’t seem worth screwing around with for a single night. Or ever, really.

We got to the site easily and pulled through just fine. Then we noticed the two large German Shepherds either fighting or playfully cavorting off-leash in front of us, the camper next to us surrounded by a wire fence to keep the small pack of tiny puppies corralled, and the gentleman carrying a diminutive dog whose back legs were no longer operational to the large open area for a…romp?

We set up quickly and stayed indoors as much as possible. The various dogs disappeared pretty soon after, so we didn’t have canine altercations. The park was a little noisy before quiet hours but hushed and pretty in the morning. A gentleman was out early with his SLR, photographing songbirds at the edge of the play area.

In short, I’d skip this KOA in favor of a boondock night if given the choice. This was our first stop on our journey and we just wanted to be sure we had a place to stay the night.
